I am sure many of you have come across the above error when you trying to either upgrade Exchange 2016 or Exchange 2019 and a simple reboot fixes it. However, I had a situation the other day in my lab where the above error kept coming up as seen below:

Exchange 2016:- a reboot from a previous installation is pending.
Exchange 2016:- A reboot from a previous installation is pending. 1

The install is checking a registry key that keeps triggering this. If you open up the Registry and Navigate to the following section:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

There is a key called “PendingFileRenameOperations” that has information in. Simply double click this key and remove the data.

Once the key has no value, you can start your upgrade or install and it should not give you the error anymore.

Hope it helps.
